History
The ICTCM was set up in 1983 to help satisfy the demand described. It was the first College in Ireland devoted, from its beginning, to the teaching of Chinese medicine, according to the Classical Traditions of TCM, as it is presently taught in China.
The ICTCM offers professional training (at under-graduate and graduate level) in Acupuncture and TCM and in Chinese Herbal Medicine and Medical Qigong according to the theories and practice employed in major medical teaching centres in China. As in contemporary China, all teaching material in the College is based upon clearly documented classical Chinese medical texts, which provide the theoretically secure base for establishing sound Clinical practice.

Location
As the College developed and expanded, it opened a purpose-built and planned College and TCM training Clinic in Dublin. These main academic premises, ICTCM House, are centrally located in Dublin a short distance from the Point Depot in Dublin’s developing Port area. There is easy access to the soon-to-be-opened Dublin Port Tunnel and to the infra-structure of roads leading to all parts of Ireland. The East-Link Bridge is only a few minutes drive away and there are excellent road links to Dublin Airport for students coming in from other parts of Ireland and Europe. Free on-street parking is also available.

Facilities
The College comprises a suit of dedicated seminar and lecture rooms in which the theoretical teaching of all the courses is undertaken. A student kitchen is also provided. These adjoin the College’s Teaching Clinic consisting of a set of purpose-designed clinical treatment rooms and a patient/client reception and waiting area.

The Director
The ICTCM was founded in 1983 by the Director, Thomas J Shanahan, a native of Ruskey, County Roscommon. Professor Shanahan is one of the most qualified and experienced TCM practitioners in Europe. From the 1st January 2004 he was appointed as a Consulting Professor of TCM with the International Department of Guangzhou University of TCM. He is the first Irishman to be appointed to such a post, in recognition of his years of experience in, and commitment to, TCM.

He has been involved in Chinese medicine for almost 30 years and has well established TCM practices in Galway and Dublin. He is a graduate of both Oxford and Cambridge universities. He is a published author and has represented Ireland at many International TCM conferences and World Congresses. For further details of his qualifications and professional associations click here.

Teaching and Clinical staff
All full-time faculty lecturers are not only qualified TCM practitioners but also experienced teachers. The senior College staff are qualified teachers with decades of experience teaching adult students in Ireland and beyond. Clinical teaching staff are established practitioners of TCM who have spent time in China working in large city hospitals with some of the most experienced and famous Chinese teachers in the whole of the People's Republic. Clinical Supervisory staff are fully qualified and insured practitioners of TCM, with their own busy Clinical practices.

All Staff, clinical and academic, have their own interests and specialisms within the broad field of TCM and are happy to share their expertise with their students. They have continued to develop their own private practices and regularly undergo Continuing Professional Development themselves, many of them visiting and undergoing Advanced post-graduate Training in China on a yearly basis. They are committed to providing a conducive learning environment for their students.

Specialist Qigong Staff
All the Medical Qigong programmes run by the College are under the auspices of Professor Xia Shuangquan who is the Honorary President of the Qigong Department of the ICTCM. In addition to being a renowned Master of Medical Qigong he also holds the post of Professor of Medical Qigong at Guangzhou University of TCM, Guangzhou, China – one of the leading TCM Universities in China.

The training programmes for the Licentiate in Medical Qigong and the Post-graduate Certificate and Diploma courses are based on his many years of experience of Qigong practice and his systematic development of Qián Tá Q́ Gong (Science of Potential State Qigong). This “Science of Potential State Qigong” (Science of Medical Qigong) was created and compiled, in co-operation with Professor Song Xinhong in response to a request for Qigong training from the Director of the ICTCM, Professor Tom Shanahan, in 1999.

All the teaching staff on the Medical Qigong programmes have been personally taught Medical Qigong (Qián Tá Q́ Gong) by both Professor Xia Shuangquan and Professor Song Xinhong in Guangzhou, China. They are all also fully trained and experienced practitioners of Acupuncture, TCM (some are also experts in Chinese Herbal Medicine) who have been teaching at the ICTCM for some years. Thus, they are able to communicate effectively with colleagues who also work in a TCM modality and can appreciate the links between Medical Qigong and other parts of the TCM repertoire.

Visiting lecturers
At appropriate intervals, certain distinguished visiting lecturers are invited by the Director of the ICTCM to give a guest lecture. This forms part of the CPD commitment of the ICTCM and reflects the broad range of affiliations which the ICTCM enjoys. For a list of some of the visiting lecturers click here.
